For A Better Us.
At the Y, we believe something changes about people when everyone has a place to belong. Kids become teammates. Beginners become regulars. Strangers become a community. And together, we all become stronger.
A healthier, more equitable, more connected community.
We’re committed to the YMCA mission: “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” To do that, we focus on three key areas.
Pillars
Youth Development
We support children and their families through all the stages of growing up. Our early childhood programs teach essential social and academic skills. Our swim lessons instill confidence and save lives. Our youth sports help athletes get active and connected. And our teen programs empower students—preparing them for college or careers, teaching leadership skills, and helping them give back to their community.
Healthy Living
We support the pursuit of healthy living, whatever that means to you. We offer programs for all ages, activity levels and interests—from finding a workout you love to meeting your neighbors.
Social Responsibility
We support a better Indiana, for each of us and all of us. Our local services and programs work to address child welfare, employment, substance abuse, housing, and education issues. And as part of the worldwide YMCA, we help bring awareness, advocate for change, and positively influence public policy.
Our History
The first YMCA was founded in London in 1844. The beginning of the YMCA in Central Indiana goes back nearly as far: 1854, to be exact. For more than 170 years, we’ve worked together to build a stronger, healthier and more connected community.
Today, we serve more than 200,000 people from all walks of life—providing over $8 million in scholarships, program subsidies and underwritten programs in low-income communities.
Together, we’ve endured wars, floods, recessions and depressions. We’ve always responded by being here for our neighbors. And we always will.
Our Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis is committed to creating an environment where every individual regardless of race/ethnic identity, gender, age, socioeconomics, language, ability, and background has an opportunity to thrive.
We believe that we should reflect the communities that we serve and value the contributions of our diverse communities. We are committed to creating a welcoming place for all by identifying and removing barriers in hiring practices, membership policies, and program offerings that inhibit our ability to create a positive, welcoming place for all.
