Following announcements by Governor Eric Holcomb and orders issued by the Marion County Public Health Department, our YMCA of Greater Indianapolis locations are temporarily closed. The mission of the Y is bigger than a building, and during the time we are closed, we are committed to sharing opportunities with you to stay connected, active and healthy. YMCA Pride Parade Walk @ YMCA at the Athenaeum
Jun 8 @ 8:00 am

Celebrate people and join the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis as we walk in the 2019 Circle City Pride Parade during this year’s Indy Pride Festival.

The YMCA will walk in the Pride Parade to embrace staff and members who identify as LGBTQ. We march  to let everyone know that the YMCA welcomes all. This will be our 5th year in the parade, and our group continues to grow! The Y at the Athenaeum will welcome all for doughnuts, coffee, and juice before the parade.

  • Meet: 8 a.m.
  • Parade Start: 10 a.m.
  • Parking: Parking near the YMCA and the Mass Ave. parade route will be very limited on this day. Please allow extra time to get Downtown, find parking and possibly walk to the YMCA. Please visit Downtown Indy’s parking website or consider using Lyft or Uber.

Don’t forget to join us the week of Pride festivities on Georgia Street for a special PRIDE-themed Workout Wednesday on June 19 at noon.

PRIDE, or LGBT/LGBTQ+ PRIDE, refers to a social movement that fosters that ideal that all people, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals should be treated equally and be able to reach their fullest potential with dignity. While PRIDE often takes a stance against systemic discrimination and violence perpetuated disproportionally towards the LGBTQ community, it has also evolved to be a space where all people come together to celebrate the rich diversity of our communities across multiple dimensions of diversity.

Historically, PRIDE has taken the form of events during the month of June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 28, 1969. These riots, largely led by LGBTQ individuals of color, occurred in protest of frequent police raids of bars which catered to LGBT patrons. Today, PRIDE varies between communities around the world – often in partnership with local organizations and businesses – to celebrate and affirm one another through festivities and events.

In 2018, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis was recognized as a ‘Championing YMCA’ on the Welcome and Affirming Structure from YMCA of the USA. With this status, everyone across the movement recognizes that our Y is leading the way toward a truly inclusive environment in which all staff, volunteers, and members are part of a culture that celebrates and appreciates differences in us all.
