This is the first event hosted by the Indy Aquatic Alliance, which began working together this year to promote the sport of swimming, water safety and fitness and includes these organizations: Indiana Swimming, Indy Parks, Indianapolis Public Schools, IU Natatorium, Jewish Community Center and YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.
One person is too many
“One person is too many to die from drowning,” said Chelsea Walls, association director of aquatics for the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. “The partners in the new Indy Aquatic Alliance believe everyone should learn about water safety and know how to swim. It’s never too late to learn.”
A leading cause of death for youth
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources 2017 Drowning Prevention Report, 50% of drowning deaths occur in the summer months of June, July and August, and the top drowning locations for children were in ponds, pools, lakes, rivers and tubs.
The largest number of drowning deaths in Indiana in 2017 occurred among ages 0-12.
The Center for Disease Control & Prevention reports drowning as the leading cause of death for 1- to 4-year-olds and the second and fourth leading cause of death for ages 5-9 and 10-14, respectively.
Learning and fun
“While it’s so very important to learn about water safety and to know how to swim, swimming is also a fun, lifelong sport and social activity that supports good health. Which is why we’ve planned open swim times and parties to remind everyone that swimming can be safe and fun for all ages.”
We’re excited to be part of the first-ever Indy Water Safety Week presented by the new Indy Aquatic Alliance! Enjoy free water safety programs and swim events at 30 locations across Greater Indianapolis throughout the week. All activities are free and open to the public. And here’s what you can do at the YMCA!
Free Water Safety Classes
To help keep kids safe, we have over 300 spots open for free “Safety Around Water” classes for ages 5-12 from June 17-20 at seven area YMCAs. In four, half-hour classes, the Y’s certified swim instructors will teach children basic safety skills and concepts, such as jump, push, turn, grab and swim, float and swim.

“America’s Swim Instructor”
Safety Around Water teaches basic water awareness skills, but is not a substitute for learning how to swim. Swim lessons are always available at eight area YMCAs for a fee and at most Y Summer Day Camps. Known as “America’s Swim Instructor,” the Y also offers swim teams, clinics, water fitness classes, certifications and training and many more aquatics programs year-round. Scholarships are available for all of these programs.
Join us for a YMCA instructor-led class on the first and third Tuesdays this summer (May – August)!
We’ll meet on The Alexander Plaza (333 S. Delaware), located on the south side of the hotel, just across the street from the Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay. This event is open to the public, and you don’t need to be a member of the YMCA to participate. Don’t forget to bring your own mat!

WHAT IS PRIDE?
PRIDE, or LGBT/LGBTQ+ PRIDE, refers to a social movement that fosters that ideal that all people, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals should be treated equally and be able to reach their fullest potential with dignity. While PRIDE often takes a stance against systemic discrimination and violence perpetuated disproportionally towards the LGBTQ community, it has also evolved to be a space where all people come together to celebrate the rich diversity of our communities across multiple dimensions of diversity.
Historically, PRIDE has taken the form of events during the month of June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 28, 1969. These riots, largely led by LGBTQ individuals of color, occurred in protest of frequent police raids of bars which catered to LGBT patrons. Today, PRIDE varies between communities around the world – often in partnership with local organizations and businesses – to celebrate and affirm one another through festivities and events.
