2nd Annual YMCA World Fest to Kick Off Welcoming Week on September 13

On September 13, 2019, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis will be hosting the second annual YMCA World Fest to kick off Welcoming Week with an international festival of food, music, vendors, and performances. Some of last year’s favorite organizations will be returning, and a few new groups will be joining in as well. The event will take place on Monument Circle, and will once again be free to attend. YMCA mascot Tyler the Tiger is expected to make an appearance, along with a few other special guests.

Bringing People Together

“Last’s years YMCA’s World Fest was a tremendous success.” says LaVeda Howell, YMCA Chief People Officer. “The goal of the event was to introduce individuals to the vast tapestry that is our city and the many different cultures the city has to offer.  With over 1,000 people coming by to visit the World Fest it was a clear to us that this was a need in our city that the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis could meet.  We are excited to come back this year with even more cultures to explore and more people from the community attending.”

What is Welcoming Week?

Last year, 75 YMCA associations in 34 states hosted more than 800 Welcoming Week events nationwide to celebrate what unites us as a community. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis hosted DACA Renewal Day, Day of Service and movie screenings, among other events.

Created by YMCA of the USA’s national partner Welcoming America, Welcoming Week, takes place each year in September, celebrates the growing movement of communities that fully embrace new Americans and their contributions to the social fabric of our country. It’s a chance for neighbors—both immigrants and U.S.-born residents—to get to know one another and celebrate what unites us as a community.

Complements ‘World Fair’ in February

This event will complement the World Fair, a free community event hosted by the YMCA’s Before & After School program at Fishers High School for 15 years. Hundreds of students and families from across Central Indiana gather annually to celebrate diverse cultures while learning to appreciate and embrace others regardless of their background.
