WHAT IS PRIDE?
PRIDE, or LGBT/LGBTQ+ PRIDE, refers to a social movement that fosters that ideal that all people, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals should be treated equally and be able to reach their fullest potential with dignity. While PRIDE often takes a stance against systemic discrimination and violence perpetuated disproportionally towards the LGBTQ community, it has also evolved to be a space where all people come together to celebrate the rich diversity of our communities across multiple dimensions of diversity.
Historically, PRIDE has taken the form of events during the month of June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 28, 1969. These riots, largely led by LGBTQ individuals of color, occurred in protest of frequent police raids of bars which catered to LGBT patrons. Today, PRIDE varies between communities around the world – often in partnership with local organizations and businesses – to celebrate and affirm one another through festivities and events.
