YMCA Indy Pride Parade with the YMCA

Celebrate PRIDE Month!  Join the YMCA in the Indy Pride Parade on June 11th!

Celebrate Pride Month as we support the work of creating and cultivating a welcoming and inclusive culture for our YMCA staff, members, volunteers and community that identify as LGBTQ+.

The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, led by our LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group, has participated in the Indy Pride Parade and Festival since 2015. In 2019, the YMCA had over 100 people walking with the YMCA during the parade. After a 2-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the YMCA will participate in the Indy Pride Parade on Saturday, June 11th, to honor and celebrate the work to achieve equal justice and opportunity for LGBTQ+ individuals everywhere.

All YMCA staff, members, families, and friends are welcome to march in the parade with the YMCA on June 11, 2022.  To sign up to walk in the parade with the YMCA and for more information about the event, including how to order this year’s YMCA Pride shirt, please click on the following link: 2022 Indy Pride with the YMCA.

More information on when and where to meet the morning of the parade will be emailed to everyone that has filled out the form included above closer to June 11th.

PRIDE, or LGBT/LGBTQ+ PRIDE, refers to a social movement that fosters that ideal that all people, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals should be treated equally and be able to reach their fullest potential with dignity. While PRIDE often takes a stance against systemic discrimination and violence perpetuated disproportionally towards the LGBTQ community, it has also evolved to be a space where all people come together to celebrate the rich diversity of our communities across multiple dimensions of diversity.
Historically, PRIDE has taken the form of events during the month of June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 28, 1969. These riots, largely led by LGBTQ individuals of color, occurred in protest of frequent police raids of bars which catered to LGBT patrons. Today, PRIDE varies between communities around the world – often in partnership with local organizations and businesses – to celebrate and affirm one another through festivities and events.

In 2018, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis was recognized as a ‘Championing YMCA’ on the Welcome and Affirming Structure from YMCA of the USA. With this status, everyone across the movement recognizes that our Y is leading the way toward a truly inclusive environment in which all staff, volunteers, and members are part of a culture that celebrates and appreciates differences in us all.
