A healthy lifestyle with help from others is fun!

We’re all about healthy living, so we’re very excited to introduce Healthy Weight and Your Child! This free, evidence-based program empowers children and families through education, healthy eating and physical activity. Families learn skills and behaviors that will help them live a healthier lifestyle. The first program begins March 25 at the Avondale Meadows YMCA.

Learning Together

The child and adult work as a pair so, together, they understand how the home environment and other factors influence their choices. Groups of 10 to 15 child and adult pairs will explore and adopt proven methods to living a healthy lifestyle in a safe, fun and active environment.

Who is it for?

Children ages 7 to 13 years old (when the group starts) can participate with an adult who must attend all sessions. The child must have:

  • a body mass index in the 95th percentile or higher
  • clearance to participate in physical activity from a health care provider or school nurse

How does it work?

The program includes a family information meeting and 25, two-hour sessions. Led by two leaders, each two-hour session includes discussions and physical activities for the full group together, adult peer time for deeper discussion, and youth peer time for physical activity.
