“I started coming to the Y five years ago after a trip to Miami Beach, FL where I saw seniors walking, jogging, biking and doing yoga in the park.
Seeing these physically active seniors inspired me to become one as well, even though most of the equipment and classes were new to me. With my can-do spirit and determination I became pretty healthy until I experienced a setback in January 2019.

A procedure changed everything
I had to have a procedure to remove fluid from my brain and a benign cyst. This left me unable to drive, read or remember what I was able to read, and walking on the treadmill became a chore. Thankfully with the Lord, my music ranging from Shirley Caesar to Bruno Mars or anything that gets me moving, and my Avondale Meadows YMCA family, I was able to overcome this setback.
Encouragement from the Y
My friends at the Y gently pushed me to do more and keep going. Now I am able to walk on the treadmill at a 3.5 mph speed, take my favorite classes, drive again, and I just finished reading Becoming by Michelle Obama in the Y Book Club.
A big thank you!
"I want to thank the Avondale Meadows Y staff and my fellow Book Club members who have helped and continue to inspire me throughout my wellness journey!”
