Local businesses and residents donate to help the Downtown Ys "raise donations through rotations" in 3rd Annual Cycle-A-Thon
The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis is hosting our 3rd Annual Cycle-A-Thon fundraiser and the Downtown Indy Ys want you to join our ride as we help raise donations through rotations.
The YMCA at the Athenaeum is nestled in the closely knit area of Mass Ave. in Downtown Indy. With deep roots spanning over 25 years in Downtown Indy, this community staple has received a wonderful boost of support for this year’s Cycle-A-Thon from businesses like Community Management Services, which donated $2,500 to the event, and Silver in the City.
The locally owned gift store recently made a generous contribution of $300 to the YMCA at the Athenaeum for this year’s ride. Rather than making this contribution for its employees, the small business’s funding will allow 12 team members of local non-profit, Outreach Indiana, to ride in the event. Outreach Indiana is a local organization that has been “equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to achieve stability and life transformation” since its founding in 1996. Their organization focuses on providing support, resources and guidance to homeless youth between the ages of 14 and 24.
Support from YMCA board members, like Wayne Patrick, has also allowed the Y at the Athenaeum to open Cycle-A-Thon seats to 6 women currently residing at Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis.
“It’s so important to us to provide opportunities to get fit and healthy to members of the community that wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it,” said YMCA at the Athenaeum Wellness Director, Erika Burcher. “That’s why receiving these sponsorships from local donors and businesses has been so meaningful. You get to help your neighbors in more ways than one.”
Burcher and her team of staff, including cycling instructors, have been working for several weeks to coordinate this year’s event and are still securing riders and sponsors.
In addition to the free “Pedal with a Purpose” t-shirt all riders receive, attendees to the YMCA at the Athenaeum’s Cycle-A-Thon also get free kombucha courtesy of Circle City Kombucha.

The Irsay Family Y will be offering riders 5 different themed rides to choose from when they sign up for their spot in Cycle-A-Thon. A brand new donor, local mobile pub The HandleBar, recently donated to sponsor 10 of their employees to get out and catch a workout at Cycle-A-Thon at the Irsay Family Y.
“This is great event where companies can donate to have their employees ride, it’s a great team builder, and they’re also giving back to their community through their donation to the Y’s Annual Campaign. It’s a great win-win.” says Sean Reaves, Associate Executive Director at the Irsay Family YMCA.
All HandleBar’s proceeds, like all other participants of the event, go back to funding scholarships for individuals and families to afford YMCA memberships and programs. The HandleBar has gone a step further by creating a campaign page to help raise additional donations for the event.
Child care is also being offered free of charge to participants of the Irsay Family Y’s Cycle-A-Thon. Play and Learn will be open from 8 a.m. – 2:15 p.m. that day, giving parents riding in the fundraiser plenty of time to ride and cool down while their children are being cared for.
For those riders that like a little variety in their workouts, the Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay will be incorporating different themes each session. Each instructor will lead their group through workouts with musical accompaniment that takes you on a fun and energetic ride.
