Anonymous Donor Makes an Instant Impact

May 1, 2019
NEWS + STORIES

When you see a need you want to do something about it. Sometimes the person who can make that change, steps up and instantly, lives are changed for the better.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Benjamin Harrison YMCA has been able to provide 38 families deeply discounted swim lessons. These families would not have been able to afford swim lessons without this generous donation.

In 2017, 114 people drowned in Indiana. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the fifth-leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S. and second leading cause for children ages 5 to 14. You can read the full report PoolSafely.gov.

Many people inquire about this exact same thing so Missy did not think too much of it.

A kind heart

After a few more conversation, Missy realized that this member was very serious about making a change. The member brought up the possibility of donating a generous amount to give families in need swim lessons. After a few more meetings, the donation and plans were made.

Beginning in mid-March, a Lawrence school was identified as the most in need, and $5 swim lessons were offered to the children and families of those who attend the school.

As of April 15, 38 families in the Lawrence area were given the opportunity to learn swim safety, and there is so much more to come! Swim lessons in April filled up fast so we've added more in June and July.

We are dedicated to water safety at the YMCA and withe the help of our donors we have been able to take that mission further. With year-round swim lessons and Safety Around the Water programs and constantly hiring lifeguards, there are many opportunities for you and your family members to stay safe around the water.

This member has a passion, saw a need, made a donation and the impact has been instant. We have 38 very grateful families, and it will not stop there.
