Kids can swim, play ball, canoe, dive for eggs, learn to cook and more at camps and classes Published: Monday, March 5, 2018The YMCA has plenty of options to keep kids and families busy over Spring Break. The 12 area YMCAs are open every day. Classes, camps and hundreds of events and activities can help kids make the most of their time away from school. Day passes are also available for $15, age 10 and under for $7 (must be accompanied by an 18-year-old). YMCA Spring Break Highlights Spring Break Camps, by the day or week Underwater Easter Egg Hunts Free Family Fun Day at Flat Rock River Camp Spring basketball and volleyball leagues starting up Swim lessons, clinics, or just splashing around Parents Day Out and Kids Night Out on weekends Let’s break it down: School Age Spring Break Camp 6:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. 11 schools across Central Indiana and three YMCAs Cost: $134 – $230/week; daily rates also available Registration is open until the Friday before camp begins School may not be where kids want to be, but Spring Break Camps are open for approximately 400, five to 12-year-olds. Kids do classic camp activities both inside and out, like arts and crafts, science and cooking projects, swimming, guest speakers and field trips. Enrichment camps, like STEM camp and Superhero Academy can also be added. Plan for summer, next school year Plan ahead while on Spring Break. The YMCA has dozens of Summer Camps and Preschools across town. Registration is open, and they fill up fast. Like most Y programs, they are open to the community. Reduced member rates and scholarships are available. Family Fun March 9, 16, 23, 30 (Fridays) Parents Day (and Night) Out Up to age 13* Four or five-hour time blocks throughout the day* Cost* March 10, 17, 24 (Saturdays) Kids Nights Out Up to age 13* 5 – 10 p.m.* Cost* Open to the community. Discounts for multiple children. *varies slightly by site The Y is all about family, but sometimes we need a break from each other. YMCA Parents Days Out on Fridays and Kids Nights Out on Saturday are typically themed with special fun and activities for the kids, while parents are away. March 23, 24, 31 Underwater Easter Egg Hunts Free or under $10. Registration is required. The community is invited to Easter Egg Hunts in and around several YMCAs on the last two weekends in March. March 23 Family Craft Night (Easter theme) Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay 6 – 8 p.m. FREE No registration required March 25 Free Family Fun Day YMCA Flat Rock River Camp 1 – 4 p.m. Spring Break is for being outside. Families can try fishing, archery and canoeing for starters at the Open House and Free Family Fun Day at YMCA Flat Rock River Camp, just outside the Indy metro area in St. Paul, IN. Families can also take a tour, play basketball, volleyball, Ga-Ga dodgeball and disc golf, go hiking and learn about all of the camping options. March 26 – 30 Spring Cooking Camp Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay 9 a.m. – noon Cost: $121 Kids prepare seasonal meals and snacks each day at Spring Cooking Camp and will be introduced to wholesome and nutritious ingredients. They’ll bring yummy food home to share with the family and new cooking skills to try on their own. Spring Break Sports Swim Lessons, Clinics and Open Pool Time Check pool schedules for open family swim times. Day passes are available for $15, youth 10 and under, for $7. The YMCA is “America’s Swim Instructor!” Take a quick class or burn off some energy. Group, private and semi-private lessons in March cover the basics from water acclimation and movement to stroke technique and building stamina. Multi-day or multi-week lessons and single day clinics are available. Observe Barracudas, Sharks, Otters, Mussels or Rays at a Y Swim Team practice over Spring Break. Kids learn resilience and sportsmanship and have lots of fun on five local YMCA swim teams. Meets are local and across Indiana. Teams practice three to five times a week. Spring Basketball Leagues Basketball was invented at the YMCA! We love our basketball in Indiana, especially at tourney time. It’s the perfect time for the kids to join a Y basketball league. Check gym schedules for open court time for pick-up games or to shoot around. Day passes are available. March 16 March Madness Pitch-in Ransburg YMCA Bring an appetizer, entrée or dessert for a pitch-in and a game or two of basketball at 11:30 a.m. at the Ransburg Family Hub. March 20 – April 12 Spring Volleyball League at Jordan YMCA Divisions I and II, Ages 8 to 11 and 11 to 15 Cost: $100; $70 Y members. Register by March 6 and receive $20 discount.
