We are thankful to be serving in the Laurelwood neighborhood and to provide the impact our college students are making every day in the lives of so many youth!
The Laurelwood community with roughly 160 units located in a low-income neighborhood, had been long considered one of the roughest communities in Indianapolis. But thanks to the efforts of the Indianapolis Intercollegiate YMCA volunteers and staff, the community has been transformed. Before the Laurelwood Community Program opened, the community children were always getting into trouble. They were without a safe place to play and hang out, and did not have access to activities to keep them occupied after school.
Now, the Laurelwood Community Program services 30-50 kids on a daily basis Monday through Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. The children are provided with a free snack, free dinner, homework help, tutoring, fun activities, and an overall safe place. One of the major benefits of the program is the ability to connect college students to communities and provide services. In the case of Laurelwood, one of the services is to just provide “love.”
