LiveSTRONG Gives Sherry New Outlook on Life

August 8, 2018
NEWS + STORIES

Sherry started her journey with the Y in 2016 through the LiveSTRONG at the YMCA program. At her initial assessment, she felt like she couldn’t do much and couldn’t use any of the machines in the Wellness Center due to pain and mobility issues. She wasn’t able to straighten her legs on the leg press machine and wasn’t able to properly maneuver the torso rotation machine. That soon changed working through the program and with guidance from her LiveSTRONG at the YMCA instructor, Cindy.

New Outlook on Life

After 12 weeks, Sherry was able to do so many things that she wasn’t able to do before, including using the rowing machine and completing 110-pound leg presses. Sherry credits the program to her feeling like a whole new person. It helped with her back, gave her the courage to learn and do new things, helped her to breathe better and to trust in teamwork with her class. Sherry strongly encourages anybody who qualifies to participate in the program.

“LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is the best thing that happened to me. I feel like a whole new person. It’s such a wonderful program, and you create friendships that last after the class is done.”

Life after LiveSTRONG at the YMCA

Even after completing the program, Sherry remains engaged at the Y. She not only attends Active Older Adult events, but has also met with a wellness advisor to continue her wellness journey. The wellness advisor showed her how to use medicine balls and weights, so Sherry’s options weren’t limited to machines.

Sherry started using a walker, but now is able to stand up to walk and only uses a cane. She continues to improve and make progress and is still working to walk without her cane, so she can get in the pool wearing the new swimsuit her friends gave her. Sherry is determined this will be achieved with support from Y staff, her friends and new confidence in herself.
