Marion County residents have improved in two key health outcomes: 1) increased physical activity in adults, and 2) decreased tobacco use. The Top 10 Coalition celebrates these wins and highlights projects that have supported these outcomes in its 2018 Annual Report.
“Today we are celebrating the work of many partners in Marion County who have come together to improve our community’s health. Many small steps have been taken by individuals, organizations and the Coalition to create a strong culture of health in Indiana. And there is more work to do!” says Chelsy Winters, senior director of Community Health at the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis and Top 10 Coalition facilitator.“The Coalition will continue to drive and support initiatives that make it easier for residents to be active, have access to healthier foods and be tobacco-free. New partners are always welcome.”
Projects that encourage safety, better health
With the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis as the backbone, the coalition of over 100 organizations also spotlights partnerships and achievements of organizations that have contributed to this movement toward better health in the report, including:
- Reduced speed limit of 25 MPH in the downtown Indianapolis mile square
- IndyGo’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to improve and expand transportation options
- Feedback from 100 camp kids on their vision for improving access to Indy Parks
- Training and resources for health care professionals on smoking cessation
- USDA Smart Snack Standards in 100% of IndyParks vending machines
- Five-year CDC REACH grant awarded to the Marion County Public Health Dept. and several partners to expand capacity around health improvement initiatives
Grassroots efforts prioritized
The coalition prioritizes projects that help create a culture of health and make it easier for Marion County residents to make safe and healthy choices. In 2018, the group collaborated with nonprofits, government entities and residents to support systems, infrastructure and policy that encourage better health.
