Personal trainers are here to help you reach your goals, whatever they may be. For 20-year-old Calvin, his goal is to be his best on the football field. He connected with Gary, to make his goals a reality through personal training.
The Journey Begins with Personal Training
"Calvin's fitness journey started with the purpose of getting him ready for fall football," said Gary, Avondale Meadows YMCA Wellness Director and Personal Trainer. "It soon morphed into getting his weight down. His starting weight was 476 pounds. In the following months, Calvin lost over 30 pounds. He continues to work hard for his goals and I am honored that he chose me to help him in his journey. Calvin combines weight training along with interval cardio workouts and skill training for his position in football."
Calvin began working out at the Avondale Meadows YMCA in January of 2021 to improve his wellness. A member had asked him about the sports that he played and quickly connected Calvin with Gary Brown. Mr. G, as Calvin refers to him, let Calvin know that if he needed help with anything or workouts, to come to him. Calvin was preparing for his freshman year at ALN Sports Prep Academy, a two-year junior college in Indianapolis, and he wanted to improve his strength, agility, and endurance.
"At the end of January, I asked Mr. G to train me," Calvin said. "I wanted to train for an upcoming football camp for college. We trained from January to the camp in April. We did workouts to help my conditioning, position work, and weight lifting. He even helped me hit my personal record, 225 lbs, in power cleaning, twice."
Hard Work has Paid Off
Mid-July 2021 marked the start of school for Calvin. He has noticed an improvement in his strength, endurance, and agility - exactly what he wanted to achieve. Calvin has now transformed his goal into weight loss. So far, Calvin has achieved a 30-pound weight loss, but he wants to stay humble and keep working until he achieves his goal completely.
More Than a Gym
The YMCA has been more than just a place to work out. Calvin has gained a community as well.
"The YMCA is a really great place with really great people," says Calvin. "It has great staff like Mr. G and Miss Jami along with a lot of other staff and members. I even have a rooting squad that’s helping me hit my goal of 380 pounds. Mr. G also offered me a job as a Wellness Advisor in April to help me pay for school. I really appreciate the YMCA members/staff for welcoming me with greetings and open arms.
