NEWS + STORIES

The holiday season is upon us! At the Y we are enjoying the change of seasons and festive celebrations. There is so much to be thankful for, and the Hendricks Regional Health YMCA is thankful to service the Westside community this past year. However, this time of year can be time-consuming and stressful for many of us. According to the American Psychological Association, over 60% of Americans report feeling stressed and fatigued during the holidays. The pressure can lead many individuals to neglect their health but staying active can be done!

  1. Go for a run - Just because it is getting colder outside doesn't mean your running routine has to cool down too! Join the Mini Marathon Prep Group and watch you hard work will pay off when you cross the finish line of the One America 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in May.
  2. Prioritize quality time - Instead of posting up on the couch Thanksgiving morning, bundle up the family and make a new tradition at the Gobble Gallop 5K. Not only will you burn a few extra calories before your Thanksgiving feast, you are also spending quality time with those you love.
  3. Stay accountable - Studies show that the average American can gain seven pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. That doesn’t have to happen! You can avoid holiday weight gain with the Zero Gain Campaign and get rewarded! Participants who maintain their weight, get a $25 program credit to put towards a YMCA program like TRX.
  4. Take a break - Don't let the stress of holiday preparations and parties bog you down. Take a mindful break with a yoga workshop and find yourself feeling refreshed and energized this holiday season when your schedule seems hectic.
  5. Get a jump start - The New Year will be here before you know it but you can start chipping away at your New Years Resolutions now. Work with a certified Personal Trainer who will design a customize program just for you or join a Small

The holidays are a time to enjoy, not a time to struggle through.

Building time for exercise into your schedule can help you reduce stress and stay on track with your health and wellness goals. If you are feeling overwhelmed with this holiday season, try these above ideas, check out a free group exercise or water fitness class, or schedule an appointment with a YMCA Wellness Advisor.
