The World is 71% Water. Kids Are 100% Curious.

At the Y, we take water safety seriously. In fact, we are talking about it all week during the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis Safety Around Water Week June 12 – 19. We are proud to bring awareness to the importance of water safety.

The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program and swim lessons can help you make sure children learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.

Ys across the city will be talking about water safety during swim lessons this week. Some centers will also be talking with campers about staying safe around water throughout the week.

What is Safety Around Water?

Several Ys will offer Safety Around Water courses at different times throughout the year. Be sure to keep an eye out for classes coming up at your local Y.

Safety Around Water is taught by a certified instructor and teaches children skills that will reduce the risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. This program focuses on teaching two skills – “Jump, Push, Turn, Grab” and “Swim, Float, Swim.” These are two skill sets children can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water.

Water Safety in Swim Lessons

Water safety is integrated into all of our swim lessons. Swim instructors teach children basic life saving skills and what to do if they get tired while swimming. Learn more about swim lessons on our website.
