Diabetes Prevention Classes

May 24, 2019
NEWS + STORIES

Prediabetes threatens over 1/3 of American adults and most don’t even know they’re at risk. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides proven, community-based classes to help prevent or delay the onset of Diabetes by over half!

ENROLLMENT IS OPEN FOR CLASSES

Classes are beginning soon at nine YMCA locations. The cost runs up to $429 for the year-long program. However, the Y can connect people to grants, scholarships and third-party payer options that can reduce the fee considerably, sometimes at no cost. And for a LIMITED TIME, members age 60 and older can participate for FREE!

Participants must be at least 18 years old and be overweight and diagnosed with prediabetes through a blood test or based on risk factors.

Call 317-269-6004 or email changemylife@indymca.org to register.

Two goals for diabetes prevention: Lose weight, increase activity

Offered in Indianapolis for over 10 years, the program emphasizes two primary goals: reduce body weight by 7% and increase physical activity by 150 minutes per week. In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach helps participants change their lifestyle by learning about healthy eating, physical activity and other behavior changes. Topics include: nutrition, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated, and more. The program meets once a week for 60 minutes for four months, followed by bi-weekly and monthly sessions for up to a year.

A lifelong gift for Mary

By taking practical, everyday steps, participants in the program can reverse prediabetes and reduce the risk for developing Type II Diabetes, and associated dangers such as heart attack, stroke, blindness and even amputation, like it did for Mary.

“The Diabetes Prevention Program has given me a lifelong gift of knowledge on how to maintain a healthy weight. Our lifestyle coach kept the class motivated. I would not have been able to lose 4 inches and 19 pounds --over 9% of my body weight--or lower my A1c without this program.”   – Mary, program participant

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program also helped Jody Hyder lose 8 percent of her body fat.

1 of 5 prevention programs

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Programs is one of five Chronic Disease Prevention Programs offered by the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis year-round. The other programs help people tackle arthritis, fall prevention, blood-pressure monitoring, and offer support to cancer survivors.
