Two goals for diabetes prevention: Lose weight, increase activityOffered in Indianapolis for over 10 years, the program emphasizes two primary goals: reduce body weight by 7% and increase physical activity by 150 minutes per week. In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach helps participants change their lifestyle by learning about healthy eating, physical activity and other behavior changes. Topics include: nutrition, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated, and more. The program meets once a week for 60 minutes for four months, followed by bi-weekly and monthly sessions for up to a year.
A lifelong gift for Mary[caption id="attachment_10522" align="alignright" width="300"] Jody made fitness a priority[/caption] By taking practical, everyday steps, participants in the program can reverse prediabetes and reduce the risk for developing Type II Diabetes, and associated dangers such as heart attack, stroke, blindness and even amputation, like it did for Mary.
“The Diabetes Prevention Program has given me a lifelong gift of knowledge on how to maintain a healthy weight. Our lifestyle coach kept the class motivated. I would not have been able to lose 4 inches and 19 pounds --over 9% of my body weight--or lower my A1c without this program.” – Mary, program participantThe YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program also helped Jody Hyder lose 8 percent of her body fat.
