Emergencies can happen anytime. Are you prepared? Our American Heart Association courses provide you with the critical training that you need for any emergency. At the Y, we support and encourage safe and effective programming by making available a wide variety of YMCA and national certifications and training opportunities for professionals working to help people live healthier lives.

Whether you are looking to become a lifeguard in the future, or are looking to get re-certified, the YMCA and American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses are designed to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be a lifeguard.

Lifeguard Training

The YMCA offers American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard training for ages 15 and up.

The YMCA Lifeguard training course is the most comprehensive program available, including certifications in CPR/AED, Basic Life Support, First Aid and Oxygen Administration.Training in equipment-based rescues for aquatic environments, accident prevention and decision-making skills prepare participants for employment.

Participants must be 16 years old before the start of class. Attendance, full participation, and successful completion of written tests and performance of all water skills are required.
Participants must be able to:

  • Tread water for at least 2 minutes
  • Swim 100 yards of front crawl
  • Swim 50 yards each of front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, inverted breaststroke kick with hands on stomach
  • Perform a feet-first surface dive in 8 to 10 feet of water and then swim underwater for 15 feet
  • Perform a series of tasks given by the instructor to demonstrate listening and scanning ability as well as stamina and endurance

CPR / AED for Professional Rescue / Lifeguards

This certification program is for current lifeguards

Lifeguards who need to get re-certified for their CPR/AED for professional rescue.


Adopt-a-Lifeguard program aims to give potential Indianapolis youth a leg up on program fees.

The prerequisite certification cost of becoming a lifeguard is a barrier for many Indianapolis teens; without, this idea first-job is unattainable. Your donation of $50 or $350 gives them access to opportunity and employment. Adopt a lifeguard and start a LIFE-SAVERS’ career.

Being prepared can avert tragedy and minimize the possibility of injury or even death. The YMCA offers an array of courses designed to help you become prepared for life-threatening emergencies. CPR / First Aid / AED

CPR / First Aid for healthcare providers and public

American Heart Association-certified instructors will train infant through Adult CPR. Child-Adult AED and Choking prevention will also be instructed. Ask us about our first Aid Certification as well.

Employee CPR/AED & First Aid

These are First Aid and CPR courses specifically for employees of the YMCA.

These courses are not open to the general public. Employees may register online for these courses as well.

Heartsaver® CPR / AED

Heartsaver® CPR AED is a video-based, instructor-led course

The course teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills. This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

Heartsaver® CPR / AED & First Aid

This Heartsaver® course is a combination of our CPR/AED course and first aid course.

You will learn adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, how to relieve choking, as well as how you can respond to basic first-aid emergencies at home, in the workplace, and outdoors.

Swim Lessons

The Y strives to help all ages learn how to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills needed to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for healthy living.

Swim Teams

The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis offers Swim Clubs and Teams to help you take your skills to the next level and build your confidence in and out of the pool.

Swim Clinics

The YMCA's Swim Clinics are designed to help prepare participants to join a swim team, or other sports, by enhancing stroke development & endurance.

Water Fitness

The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis offers a wide range of water fitness group exercise classes for all ages and ability levels.

The YMCA has teamed up with the American Heart Association to offer our community a variety of Certification & Training courses that will provide you with the critical training that you need for any emergency.
