Meet the New OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA in Pike Township
YLovesVets – these are words the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis is committed to. Every one of us can pitch in to keep veterans and their families strong. Help us pioneer a new kind of YMCA that blends the best community programs with specialized services for veterans and active military.
A community center promoting healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility within the culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse population of Pike Township—attracting military veterans and service members from across Central Indiana.
The OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA in Pike will enable veterans, active military, and their families to grow healthier side by side with civilians at the first YMCA facility in the nation to offer clinical VA services alongside traditional Y programs.
The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis has designated 12 acres, located at 5315 Lafayette Road and provided by the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township, as the future site of the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA. The new facility will replace the current Y in Pike Township, which is limited in capacity. It will nearly triple the number of Pike residents that the Y can serve and will feature a pool, a gym, expanded wellness services with a demonstration kitchen, sports activities, and day camps.
In addition to being a full-service facility for the community, the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA at Pike will partner with the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Roudebush healthcare staff will provide specialized medical services in 5,000 square feet of space dedicated for veterans, including:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Pain management
In additional to the medical services offered by the VA, the YMCA will use space at Pike and in other Indianapolis metro locations to provide special programs for veterans and military service members. These include:
- Financial health training
- Job support
- Wellness coaching
- Diabetes prevention
- Adaptive sports
- Nutrition and healthy cooking classes
To build positive change in Pike Township and across Central Indiana, we first need to support those who have tirelessly served us. Veterans and active military are an integral part of this rich, diverse community we call home. Nearly 120,000 military veterans live in central Indiana, with more than 55,000 in Marion County and 11,000 in a five-mile radius of the new Pike Y location.
Their reintegration into civilian life is best addressed in the context of community. The YMCA will provide a “third” place— a safe location outside of home and work— in an easily accessible facility.
More than anyone, those who have served in the armed forces know that strengthening community takes sacrifice and a team effort. Are you up to the challenge? Pledge your support by making a donation to the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA in Pike Township today.
