Supporting Programs and Services for Military Members and Their Families

These are exciting times at the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. We have more than 2,300 veterans, military service members and their families as part of our membership, and that number is growing every day. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis is partnering with veteran service organizations across Central Indiana to provide programming, opportunities and access to services specific to veterans and military members. Currently, we offer activities and services related to the overall spiritual, mental and physical wellness of our veterans and military members. These activities range from the use of our fitness areas to therapeutic gardening.  We believe it is our mission to make the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis a great place for veterans/military members and their families to live, work and stay connected.

In our ongoing effort to serve the veteran and military community in Central Indiana, the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA opened in Pike Township in December, 2018. This full-service YMCA is the first in the country to feature a VA Health Clinic inside the walls of a YMCA.

Why Veterans?

To build positive change in Pike Township and across Central Indiana, we first need to support those who have tirelessly served us. Veterans and active military are an integral part of this rich, diverse community we call home. Nearly 120,000 military veterans live in central Indiana, with more than 55,000 in Marion County and 11,000 in a five-mile radius of the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA. Their reintegration into civilian life is best addressed in the context of community. The YMCA provides a “third” place— a safe location outside of home and work— in an easily accessible facility.

  • All YMCA of Greater Indianapolis locations offer a 20% subsidy off regular Association-wide membership rates for veterans, military service members and their families who do not otherwise qualify for a Y membership through DOD Military Outreach Initiative / Title 10 (outlined below).  For this 20% subsidy, proof of service is required, and therefore military memberships cannot be completed online. Please stop by or contact your local YMCA Center of choice for more information and so that we may assist you with this membership category. (Please note: This subsidy is not available on single location rates, which are already offered at a subsidy.)
  • And, for Title 10 Personnel: In partnership with the Armed Services YMCA and the Department of Defense, the Y is proud to offer memberships and respite child care services to eligible military families and personnel to give them extra support during this difficult period. It’s our way of giving back to those who dedicate themselves to serving our country.
