When Rick and his wife became empty nesters, they felt a pull to give back. A presentation at their church about Big Brothers Big Sisters sparked something in them. Before long, Rick was matched with Blaze, a teenager full of kindness and resilience.
Blaze admits he didn’t grow up with a steady father figure. “I never really had someone I could just go and hang out with, someone I could count on after the end of the school day,” he shared. “Rick really played a big part in my life… they stepped up and put a little extra serving on my plate.”
Finding Connection in a Third Place
Their story quickly grew beyond a formal match. Blaze and Rick’s outings were about fishing together, hiking trails and finding worms under rocks before celebrating Blaze’s first catch. Most of all, they discovered the joy of working out side by side at the YMCA.
“The gym gives you stability,” Blaze said. “It’s character-building. You never regret going to the gym. It just makes you feel better about yourself at the end of the day.”
For Rick and Blaze, the YMCA became more than a fitness center. It became their third place: a safe, welcoming environment outside of school and home where their relationship could grow and thrive.
A Home for Matches, Families and Futures
The YMCA is proud to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana to create space for stories like this. Matches come to the Y to shoot hoops, swim laps or simply spend time together. Every outing builds trust, confidence and lifelong habits of wellness. We are excited to provide complimentary access for all Bigs when visiting the Y with their Littles. To get started, simply bring a photo ID on your first visit and present your QR code at the front desk for entry.
Rick describes Blaze in one word: resilient. “Through everything that’s been placed in front of him, he has found a way through it. Most people would have quit if they were dealt the hand that he was dealt in life. The Blaze I know now would look at the Blaze I met and smile at how far he’s come.”
At the YMCA, we see that growth every day. We see youth who, through mentorship and belonging, gain the confidence to reach their potential. We see mentors who step into young lives with encouragement, patience and hope. We see how a safe, welcoming space like the YMCA makes all the difference.
Stronger Together
The partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana and the YMCA demonstrates the best of what community can be. Together, we are building a home for healthy habits, meaningful relationships and brighter futures.
Because at the YMCA, no matter who you are or where you come from, you’ll always find a place where you belong.
Have you and your Little made memories at the Y? We’d love to hear about it! Share your story with us so we can celebrate the joy and connection that happen when Bigs and Littles come together at the YMCA.
