Matt Bair began his fitness journey in his early 20s when he moved to Indianapolis from northern Indiana. Seeking a supportive and welcoming community, he found solace at the downtown YMCA, specifically the YMCA at the Athenaeum. This experience marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in his life.
Matt quickly noticed the unique atmosphere at the Y, which set it apart from other fitness centers. “I really liked the people. The Y was so diverse. There were older and younger people there, and working out didn’t feel like a competition. It felt good to actually see people smiling and giving each other fist bumps,” Matt recalled.
Overcoming Personal Struggles
While Matt loved staying physically fit, he also faced personal struggles with alcohol addiction. Working a split shift at his job often left him with idle hours, which he sometimes spent drinking. This unhealthy habit led to multiple stints in rehab over the years. However, even during these difficult times, the thought of the Y and its supportive community remained with him. “Even during those relapses, I knew the Y people would be there to welcome me back,” he said. “Fitness changed that, and it will be with me for the rest of my life. Fitness and my recovery go hand in hand.”
Support from Personal Trainers
Matt attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of his personal trainers at the Y. Shaun Murphy, Kaylee Zarate, and Laura Scheid played crucial roles in his journey, teaching him how to protect his body and prevent injuries through proper stretching techniques. When asked where he would be without the Y, Matt didn't hesitate: “I would be injured! The trainers gave me a better way to train—a different way to get the results and to be efficient with my training.”
A Broader Impact
Matt's appreciation for the Y extends beyond his personal experiences. He values the Y's impact on the broader community. “The Y is all over the community. You can get your fitness opportunity at a location in almost every part of the city, and no one is excluded. The Y is welcoming and always giving back,” he said.
He believes that supporting the Y financially is an investment not just in the organization, but in the community and oneself. Matt’s commitment to the Y and its mission is evident in his continued involvement and advocacy.
A Beacon of Hope
Now sober for almost three years, Matt’s story is a testament to resilience and hope. He firmly believes that his journey is within reach for anyone willing to fight for their recovery. “I truly believe that if I can do it, anybody can. We all can fight through it,” he said.
