As the city of Indianapolis prepares for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Weekend, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis is leaning into the moment—not just to celebrate basketball, but to create real, lasting impact for girls and women in sports. In partnership with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the WNBA All-Star Host Committee, and Servcom, the YMCA is hosting a dynamic lineup of free events designed to inspire, empower, and elevate.
From spotlighting women leaders in coaching and officiating to creating exciting new spaces for girls to play, these efforts all share one powerful message: every girl deserves the chance to shine, and every woman deserves the opportunity to lead.
Why It Matters
Sports have the power to shape young lives. For girls, stepping onto the basketball court can be a life-changing experience—helping them build confidence, develop leadership skills and find a community that uplifts them. Girls who participate in sports are more likely to succeed in school, have positive mental health and grow into strong, resilient adults.
But the reality is, many girls—especially in underserved communities—don’t have the same access to quality sports programs. They often lack role models who look like them, or coaches who understand their experiences. And while the number of girls playing sports has grown, women are still vastly underrepresented in coaching and officiating roles, even in girls’ leagues. Representation at every level is essential—not just for visibility, but for the development of a more inclusive and equitable game.
That’s why the YMCA’s upcoming programs are about more than just basketball. They’re about changing the narrative, opening doors and fueling a movement.
