As we step into May, we are reminded that we are in a season of renewal and momentum. The days are growing longer, nature is in full bloom, and the rhythm of everyday life is picking up pace and moving faster. Instead of stepping into May, you might feel like you're racing to keep up. This is fitting because May is the month that features popular races like the Indy 500 and the Mini Marathon. No matter which race you face in the rush of life, whether it's a 500-mile motorsports classic, a 13-mile running event, or personal pursuits in wellness, faith, and daily responsibilities, one principle remains the same: Pacing yourself is key to enduring the journey.
If you’re like me, you may have stepped onto a treadmill at the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA, having just set aside your cleaning solution and yellow towel, eager to push yourself toward your fitness goals. But what happens when we start too fast? We burn out quickly and can’t maintain our energy. If we go too slow? We don’t see much progress. Finding the right pace that challenges us but doesn’t exhaust us is key. Life is no different! Whether in our work, relationships, or spiritual growth, consistency matters more than short bursts of unsustainable effort.
As exciting as it is to watch the cars jockey for position when the green flag is waved to start the race, the Indy 500 isn’t won in the first lap. It’s a test of endurance, strategy, and timing. Drivers know that if they push too hard too soon, they risk running out of fuel or damaging their car before the finish line. They depend on pit stops—those essential moments to refuel, change tires, and regain focus. Likewise, we need regular rest and renewal in our own lives. Whether through quiet moments of reflection, time with family, or deepening our faith, taking time to recharge allows us to stay strong for the long haul.
The Bible speaks powerfully about endurance and trusting God’s timing. Isaiah 40:31 (New King James Version) reminds us:
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
Waiting on the Lord isn’t about standing still; it’s about moving at the right pace, trusting that He provides strength at the right moments. Just as athletes build endurance over time, we develop spiritual endurance when we rely on God rather than rush ahead in our own strength.
As we embrace the energy of May and all it brings, let’s remember the value of pacing ourselves. Whether you’re training at the Y, working toward a personal goal, or navigating life’s challenges, steady and intentional progress leads to lasting success. Take moments to pause, pray, reflect, and recharge. In these moments of prayer and reflection, we can deepen our trust in the Lord and adjust our pace, maintaining endurance for our journey...one step at a time.
