Be a Water-Ready Family
Learn More & Take Action
Nine in 10 parents see swimming as an essential skill, but 24% have low confidence in their kids’ ability to stay safe in the water.
What Matters Most Deserves Your Full Focus
The Y wants to ensure all families are ready for a fun and safe summer. To do that, we’re helping families become “water-ready” with three simple steps that help reduce the risk of drowning.
What You Can Do Now:
- Take the Phones Down, Eyes Up pledge to power down and put your phones away when watching children near or around water.
- Assign Water Watchers anytime a group is near water with children. These alert, responsible and active supervisors use a badge, so your family always knows who is watching.
- Get your child water ready in our Safety Around Water and swim classes.
Three Easy Steps for Water Safety

Safe Swimmers, Confident Kids
Water safety isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. YMCA Safety Around Water and swim lessons teach essential skills that help kids stay safe and confident while they explore the world around them. The Y’s kind, supportive and skilled aquatics team are ready to help children learn and thrive in the water.

Phones Down, Eyes Up
Distractions like texts or emails may seem harmless, but they can be deadly around water. Eighty-eight percent of children who drown do so with an adult present. Designate a Water Watcher—an attentive adult who stays off phones and keeps eyes on kids. Your feed can wait. Their safety can’t.

Be a Water Watcher
Take the Water Watcher pledge to help keep kids safe around water. That means following pool rules, never leaving children unsupervised, avoiding breath-holding games, limiting distractions and staying in the water with children age 6 and younger. Be the adult who’s all in—focused, alert and ready.
The Y is America's swim instructor. And Y swim instructors are exceptional.
1 million children learn to swim at the Y each year.
Here’s what Hannah shared about her daughter’s experience:
“Miss Pam in aquatics is heaven sent! Our daughter is slow to warm up and was scared of swim lessons, she showed our daughter to be confident and that she can trust her. It’s helped so much!”
