Welcoming Week is more than just a celebration—it’s a chance to create meaningful connections and embrace the diversity that strengthens our community. This annual initiative brings people together from all walks of life, encouraging friendships, cultural understanding and a true sense of belonging.
This week at our Ransburg YMCA, one of the highlights came from Wellness Director Alejandra Varo, who hosted a spirited game of Bilingual Lotería with our Active Older Adults. Lotería, a traditional Mexican game similar to bingo, offered participants not only the joy of play but also an opportunity to engage with culture in a hands-on way. True to tradition, players even used beans as bingo chips, filling the room with both laughter and nostalgia.
“The game was such a fun way to bring people together and celebrate culture,” said Varo. “I’m so grateful to be part of a community that values inclusion, wellness and joy at every stage of life.”
Welcoming Week at the Y reflects our deep commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels seen and valued. From youth to seniors, newcomers to long-time members, the YMCA believes that when we open our doors and our hearts, we create a healthier, more equitable, more connected community for all.
Through activities like Bilingual Lotería, group exercise, cultural showcases and special gatherings, Welcoming Week reminds us that inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a practice. It’s about celebrating our unique stories while finding common ground in play, health and community.
At the Y, every person belongs. Welcoming Week is one more way we live out our mission to ensure all feel supported, celebrated and at home.
