A Legacy of Giving

NEWS + STORIES

At the heart of every strong community lies generosity, kindness, giving and a deep commitment to helping others. Kim and Mae Leech embody these values and their recent gift of $10,000 during the YMCA’s Day of Giving is yet another testament to their dedication to children and families in our community. In recognition of their generosity, the Jordan YMCA has named an Early Learning classroom in their honor, ensuring that their legacy of giving will continue to shape young lives for years to come.

Over the past three years, the Leeches have contributed more than $120,000 to the YMCA, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to ensuring that all children—regardless of their background—have access to safe spaces where they can grow, learn and thrive. With a career spanning 40 years in education, Mae Leech has seen firsthand the impact that a nurturing and welcoming environment can have on a child’s future.

“The Y’s mission aligns perfectly with our vision for a more inclusive and supportive community,” Mae shares. “I spent most of my career in inner-city schools, and I saw firsthand that kids needed an outlet. There simply weren’t enough safe places for them to play, to be accepted and to grow. Supporting the Y is a natural choice for us—it’s a place where all children belong.”

Kim Leech, a retired pastor, has always believed in investing in people. Over the years, he quietly built on those investments, never imagining that they would one day allow him to give back in such a meaningful way. Recently, he cashed in a portion of those shares and donated the proceeds to the Jordan YMCA’s Annual Campaign at the Trustee Level.

“For us, it’s important that our resources are used well,” Kim says. “When we walk into the Y, we see a place where children from all backgrounds are welcome. We see diversity, inclusion and a commitment to fairness. That’s the kind of ‘weather’ that makes a real difference.”

Kim and Mae’s connection to the YMCA is deeply personal. As a child, Kim took swimming lessons at the Jordan Y, a place that was still new at the time. After moving away and spending years working in a low-income area of Kansas, the couple returned to Indiana in 2004 with a renewed passion for helping those in need. More recently, Kim joined the Y for personal training after experiencing muscle loss. Through this experience, he saw firsthand the impact the YMCA has—not just for children, but for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

“I’ve been so impressed by the people here,” Kim says. “The staff, the members—everyone contributes to this welcoming environment. And I think that’s something you feel the moment you walk through the door.”

For Mae, the location of the Jordan YMCA is another reason why their contributions matter so much.

“It’s not in a wealthy suburb,” she says. “It’s in the heart of the city, where it belongs—where it can do the most good. Children don’t belong on the streets; they belong in a safe environment where they can learn, play and be supported.”

The impact of the Leeches’ generosity extends far beyond a single classroom. Every contribution to the Jordan YMCA’s Annual Campaign helps provide opportunities for families who might not otherwise be able to afford a membership. It ensures that everyone—regardless of age, income, or background—can experience the life-changing programs the Y offers.

Kim and Mae Leech’s story is a reminder that we all have the power to invest in something greater than ourselves. Whether through time, talent, or treasure, each of us can play a part in creating a healthier, more connected community.
