YMCA of Greater Indianapolis offers reduced membership rates and classes for veterans, active military, creating new opportunities for local military communities
Indianapolis (January 9, 2017) – The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis now offers reduced fee memberships for veterans, active military service members and their families at all of its 12 central Indiana-facilities. The special rate, which started January 1, represents a savings of 20 percent off standard pricing. Interested applicants should apply in person to get the special rate, and must present a valid military or veteran ID card, a DD214 form showing release from active duty, or a driver’s license indicating a veteran designation. If a qualified applicant cannot afford to pay the reduced rate, they may be eligible for additional financial assistance.
Additionally, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis will offer financial literacy classes and job fairs for the military community in several facilities in 2017. More programs, such as Y Diabetes Prevention for Veterans and classes to prepare recruits and active military for required physical fitness tests, are planned. Schedules will be available online as they are confirmed. Local Ys will also increase efforts to connect veterans with other local service providers.
“Providing key health services to our servicemen and women and their families continues to be vital in our communities,” said YMCA of Greater Indianapolis President and CEO Eric Ellsworth. “Through reduced rates and access to new programs, we’re moving far beyond the notion of ‘health’ and reinforcing a commitment to fostering overall wellness among our veterans, service members and their loved ones.”
Enhanced opportunities for the military community will precede the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA planned for Pike Township, the first YMCA in the nation with a VA presence. A full-service facility for the entire community, the OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA will include 5,000 square feet of clinic space staffed by healthcare professionals from the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. The facility will be located at 5315 Lafayette Road on land provided by Pike Township Schools.
