Pack a Healthy Lunchbox for Back-to-School Success

As students head back to school, a nutritious lunch can help keep them energized, focused and ready to learn. Packing a balanced lunch doesn't have to be complicated—small changes can make a big difference!

Build a Balanced Lunch: Include foods from several food groups:

Whole Grains – Whole-wheat bread, tortillas, crackers, brown rice or pasta

Lean Protein – Turkey, chicken, tuna, hard-boiled eggs or beans

Fruits & Vegetables – Add color with carrots, berries, grapes or bell peppers

Dairy or Dairy Alternatives – Yogurt, milk or cheese for calcium

Water – Staying hydrated helps support focus and overall health

Easy Lunchbox Ideas

  • Turkey and cheese sandwich on whole-wheat bread, apple slices, baby carrots and milk
  • Hummus with whole-grain pita, cucumber slices, grapes and string cheese
  • Pasta salad with grilled chicken and vegetables, plus fresh fruit
  • Yogurt parfait with berries and granola, paired with a hard-boiled egg

Pack Smart

  • Let kids help choose healthy foods—they're more likely to eat what they helped pack!

Healthy Habits Start Small

A balanced lunch doesn't have to be perfect. Including a variety of foods from different food groups can help fuel learning, sports and after-school activities. Start with one or two healthy changes this week and build from there!

Challenge: Try packing one new fruit or vegetable in your lunchbox this week!
